1099-K Tax Calculator
Figure out taxes on 1099-K income from PayPal, Stripe, eBay, or gig platforms: taxable portion after expenses, SE tax, and quarterly estimates. Free, private.
If you sell on eBay, get paid through PayPal, Stripe, or drive for a gig platform, the platform files a 1099-K with your gross transactions — and the IRS gets the same copy. Gross is not income, though: refunds, fees, shipping reimbursements, and cost of goods all come off before you owe tax.
This calculator walks from the 1099-K gross amount to the taxable net, applies self-employment tax where the activity is a business, and shows what to set aside for the quarter.

Federal threshold: over $20,000 AND 200+ transactions. Estimate quarterly tax before April.
Federal 1099-K threshold is over $20,000 AND over 200 transactions (OBBBA restored this threshold retroactively; the American Rescue Plan $600 rule never took effect). Some states have much lower 1099-K thresholds (e.g. VA/MD/MA/DC $600, IL $1,000, NJ $1,000) — a state filing requirement can exist even when the federal one does not. State income tax rates are simplified. This is for estimation only — consult a tax professional.
How 1099-K tax estimation works — illustrated
A 1099-K is an information return, not a tax bill: payment platforms such as PayPal, Stripe, Venmo, and Etsy file it with the IRS to report your gross payment-card and third-party-network payouts. What you actually owe starts from that gross number minus your deductible business expenses (cost of goods, shipping, platform fees), which gives your net profit on Schedule C. From there, self-employment tax of 15.3% applies to 92.35% of net earnings, and federal and state income tax are added on top. Even if no 1099-K is issued, the income is still taxable.
Gross platform payouts are never the taxable amount — expenses come out first, then SE tax (15.3% on 92.35% of the net) plus income tax. The quarterly payment is the total divided across four Form 1040-ES installments.
Elena, an Etsy seller in Portland, receives $15,000 of platform payouts in a year with $3,000 of materials, shipping, and marketplace fees, filing single.
- Net profit:$15,000 gross payouts − $3,000 expenses = $12,000 net on Schedule C
- SE tax base:$12,000 × 92.35% = $11,082
- SE tax (15.3%):$11,082 × 15.3% = $1,696, plus federal and state income tax
- Quarterly payment:total estimated tax ÷ 4, paid via Form 1040-ES (Apr 15 · Jun 15 · Sep 15 · Jan 15)

Frequently asked questions
Do I owe tax on the full 1099-K amount?
No — the 1099-K reports gross payment volume, which includes sales tax you collected, shipping reimbursements, refunds, and the cost of goods you sold. Your taxable income is net profit after legitimate business expenses. Reimbursements of personal costs (e.g., splitting dinner on Venmo) that trigger a 1099-K by volume are not income at all.
What is the 1099-K reporting threshold?
Federal law requires platforms to issue a 1099-K when gross payments exceed $2,500 (scheduled to drop to $600 in later years — states like California and New York already use lower or no thresholds). You owe tax on net profit regardless of whether a form was issued.
