VAT rates are based on EU Council and national government data. Some member states have temporary rate changes or sector-specific rates not captured here. Verify with the relevant national tax authority.
VAT is a consumption tax collected at every stage of a supply chain, but it is designed so the burden lands on the final consumer. A registered business adds VAT to its sales (output tax) and reclaims the VAT it paid on its own purchases (input tax), remitting only the difference to the tax authority. The rate is always applied to the net price, never to the tax itself, which is why going from gross back to net is a division, not a subtraction. Cross-border sales change the rules: cross-EU B2B sales use the reverse charge (0% charged, buyer self-accounts) and exports to non-EU customers are zero-rated.
Forward mode adds VAT to a net price; reverse mode extracts it from a gross price using the same factor of (1 + rate). The bottom strip shows when each of the three cross-border scenarios applies.

To calculate VAT: enter the net amount and select the VAT rate — the tool shows the VAT amount, gross total, and supports reverse-charge calculations for B2B.
FreeToolHub VAT Calculator is a free browser-based tool that calculates VAT for EU and UK transactions, no signup.
Calculate VAT for any EU country: forward, reverse charge, B2B. Free, accurate, no signup.
The EU VAT Calculator computes value-added tax for all 27 EU member states, from Germany's 19% standard rate to Hungary's 27% maximum and Luxembourg's 17% minimum. Choose a transaction scenario—domestic B2C, cross-EU B2B reverse charge, or export outside the EU—then run either direction: add VAT to a net price or extract it from a gross price. Standard, reduced, and super-reduced rates are built in per country, such as France's 2.1% super-reduced tier. Beyond single amounts, a multi-rate invoice builder totals line items that mix rates, and an offline validator checks foreign VAT number formats against each country's official pattern.
EU-based freelancers and small businesses setting invoice prices use it to charge the right rate without memorizing 27 countries' tables. E-commerce sellers shipping across borders check whether a sale is domestic B2C, a reverse-charge B2B supply, or a zero-rated export, since the treatment changes what appears on the invoice. Accountants double-check gross-to-net extractions on supplier bills that quote VAT-inclusive totals. Non-EU sellers registering under OSS verify destination rates quickly. Finance students and bookkeepers learning VAT mechanics get a sandbox with real rates, and anyone drafting an invoice that mixes food at a reduced rate with electronics at the standard rate can total both tiers in one pass.
(1) Pick your scenario and country. The rate lookup uses the seller's standard, reduced, or super-reduced figure—for Germany that is 19%, 7%, or nothing above the reduced tier—and cross-EU B2B and export scenarios force the rate to 0% under reverse-charge and zero-rating rules. (2) In forward mode, VAT equals net × rate ÷ 100 and gross is the sum; in reverse mode, net equals gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) with VAT as the remainder, which handles prices that already include tax. (3) The invoice builder repeats step two per line item and sums net, VAT, and gross columns, while the VAT number field validates format offline—nothing is sent to any server.
Reverse charge shifts VAT accounting from seller to buyer when a VAT-registered business in one EU country buys from a supplier in another. Select the Cross-EU B2B scenario, and the calculator sets VAT to 0% while naming the buyer's country—the customer self-accounts for their local VAT on their own return, so your invoice shows the zero rate with a reverse-charge notation. Exports outside the EU are also zero-rated but for a different reason: the sale leaves the union entirely. You can type the buyer's VAT number to check its format against the issuing country's official pattern, like DE followed by nine digits, entirely offline.
Divide the gross amount by (1 + VAT rate). At 20% UK VAT, a £120 gross price contains £100 net and £20 VAT. The calculator does both add-VAT and remove-VAT directions.
UK 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Italy 22%, Spain 21%, Ireland 23%. Reduced rates apply to food, books, and other categories — the tool ships preset rates for 30+ countries.
The EU-wide distance-selling threshold is €10,000 annual cross-border sales; below it you charge domestic VAT, above it you register in destination countries or use the OSS one-stop scheme.
No. Sales tax is charged only at final retail sale to the consumer and varies by state and locality; VAT is charged at every production stage with input credits and is nationally uniform per rate band.
It covers all 27 EU member states with their current standard rates (ranging from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary), plus reduced rates. It handles forward VAT calculation, reverse-charge for B2B cross-border transactions, and VAT-inclusive to VAT-exclusive conversions instantly.
Under the EU reverse-charge mechanism, the buyer (not the seller) accounts for VAT on cross-border B2B services. Enter your net amount and select both countries to see the correct 0% export rate on your invoice and the VAT the buyer self-assesses domestically.
