What Is EXIF Metadata?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) metadata is embedded information in digital photos. It can include GPS coordinates showing exactly where the photo was taken, the camera make and model, timestamp, exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), software used, and even the device serial number. This data is invisible when viewing the photo but can be read by anyone.

Why Should You Remove EXIF Data?

When you share photos online, the EXIF metadata travels with the image. This means anyone who downloads your photo can see your home address (from GPS), when you took the photo, what device you use, and your editing software. Stripping EXIF data protects your privacy before sharing photos on social media, dating apps, forums, or marketplaces.

How Does This Tool Work?

This tool reads the EXIF metadata directly in your browser — your photos are never uploaded to any server. It displays all metadata organized by category (camera, settings, date/time, GPS location, software). The cleaned version is created by re-encoding the image via HTML5 Canvas, which strips all metadata (EXIF, IPTC, XMP) while preserving image quality.

Frequently asked

What EXIF data can be in a photo?

EXIF data can include: GPS coordinates (latitude/longitude of where the photo was taken), camera make and model, lens information, timestamp (date and time), exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), focal length, flash usage, white balance, orientation, software used for editing, and in some cases, the device serial number.

Does this tool upload my photos?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to any server. The EXIF parsing and metadata stripping all happen locally using JavaScript and HTML5 Canvas. This ensures complete privacy — even we cannot see your photos.

Does removing EXIF affect image quality?

The visual quality is not significantly affected. The tool re-encodes the image via Canvas at 92% JPEG quality (adjustable). There may be minimal compression artifacts, but the image looks identical to the human eye. PNG output is lossless. The file size may decrease slightly because metadata is removed.

Which image formats are supported?

This tool supports JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), and WebP (.webp). JPEG files typically have the most EXIF data. PNG files can have text chunks. WebP files can contain EXIF data in a special chunk. All metadata is removed regardless of format.
