How compression trades size for quality — illustrated

Two levers control file size: pixel count (width × height) and quality (how aggressively detail is discarded). Resizing cuts pixels; quality compression cuts redundant detail. Done well, most images can drop to one-fifth their original size with no visible change.

WebP handles both roles and typically runs 25-35% smaller than JPG at similar quality, but older software may not open it. The resizer converts between all three so the format decision happens at export, not by accident at upload.

Why does upscaling look blurry while downscaling looks fine?

Downscaling throws pixels away, and simple algorithms do that cleanly. Upscaling invents pixels that were never captured, and no algorithm — not even AI ones — can recover detail the sensor never recorded. A 400px logo stretched to 1200px will always look soft. If you need a bigger image, go back to the original source; resizing an already-small file cannot add information.

What happens to EXIF data like GPS location when I resize?

Will resizing reduce the quality of my image?

It depends on the output format and resize method. For downscaling, the browser's high-quality Lanczos resampling produces excellent results.
