How business-day counting works — illustrated

A business day is any day your team actually works: Monday through Friday, minus any holidays that fall on a weekday. The count is a simple subtraction — total calendar days, then take out every Saturday and Sunday, then take out the holidays that landed on a weekday. Two details trip people up. First, a holiday that falls on a weekend (like July 4, 2026, a Saturday) costs no working day on its own, but an observed weekday off (July 3, 2026) does. Second, the same holiday list can't be reused across companies, which is why this tool lets you add custom holidays alongside the US federal calendar.

Each workday cell below is counted; Saturday and Sunday are always excluded, and a weekday holiday (shown in amber) is excluded too. For the range Jan 1 – Mar 31, 2026: 90 total days − 26 weekend days − 3 weekday holidays (Jan 1, Jan 19, Feb 16) = 61 business days — the stacked bar shows the split.

Worked example

A marketing agency is quoting a delivery deadline from January 1 to March 31, 2026, and needs the number of working days the team actually has, counting US federal holidays.

  1. Total calendar days:90 days between Jan 1 and Mar 31, 2026
  2. Weekend days:26 — every Saturday and Sunday is excluded from the count
  3. Weekday holidays:3 — Jan 1 (New Year’s Day), Jan 19 (MLK Jr. Day), Feb 16 (Presidents’ Day) all fall on weekdays
  4. Business days:90 − 26 − 3 = 61 working days for the project
