About this tool
Calculate material quantities and costs for flooring, paint, tile, and wallpaper. Multi-room support, waste factor, and sales tax. Free, no signup, 100% private.
Why Use a Material Calculator?
Buying too little material means extra trips to the store and project delays. Buying too much wastes money. This calculator helps you get the right amount the first time, including a waste factor for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.
Supported Project Types
Flooring (boxes of planks or tiles), Paint (gallons with coverage area), Tile (square foot boxes), and Wallpaper (rolls). Each type has its own default coverage per unit, which you can adjust. Add multiple rooms to calculate the total material needed for your entire project.
Waste Factor Explained
The waste factor adds extra material to account for cuts, mistakes, damaged pieces, and future repairs. A 10% waste factor is standard for most projects. For diagonal tile patterns or complex room shapes, use 15%. For paint with two coats, double the coverage calculation.
Frequently asked
How much extra flooring should I buy?
A standard waste factor of 10% is recommended for most flooring projects. For diagonal patterns, irregular rooms, or premium materials, use 15%. This covers cuts, mistakes, and leaves spare planks for future repairs.
How much paint do I need for one room?
One gallon of paint typically covers 350 square feet with one coat. For two coats, you need double the paint. Measure your wall area (length × height) and divide by 350 to get the number of gallons.
Does the calculator include sales tax?
Yes. Enter your local sales tax rate and the calculator adds it to the material cost. This gives you the true total cost of your project including tax.
Can I calculate multiple rooms at once?
Yes. Add as many rooms as needed. Each room can have a different name and dimensions. The calculator sums all rooms and gives you the total material needed and total cost.
