Why HEIC saves space — illustrated
HEIC wraps the HEVC (H.265) video codec around a still image. It encodes a photo in 16×16 blocks, predicts each block from its neighbors, and stores only the difference — so flat areas (sky, walls) use near-zero bytes. JPEG instead stores every 8×8 block independently and discards high frequencies, which loses detail even at similar file size.
A photo's sky is nearly uniform. HEVC copies the whole block for a few bytes; JPEG marches through every 8×8 block and throws away high-frequency detail. Net result: HEIC ≈ half the bytes at equal quality — at the cost of needing a decoder.
