How a countdown timer really works — illustrated

A countdown is one subtraction repeated every second: the browser calls Date.now() on each tick, computes remaining = target − now in milliseconds, then breaks that number into readable units using floor division and modulo — days from the whole, then hours/minutes/seconds as the remainder of the previous unit. When remaining crosses zero the app fires a browser Notification (with the user's permission) and flips to "passed". Events are persisted in localStorage, and an ?embed=1 iframe URL lets you drop a live timer onto any external page.

The time-until pipeline
Target timeDec 1, 09:00NowDate.now() / secondRemaining (ms)target − nowAt 0notification firesDecompose the remaining ms into units — each is the remainder of the previous:Days⌊ms ÷ 86.4M⌋Hours⌊ms ÷ 3.6M⌋ mod 24Minutes⌊ms ÷ 60K⌋ mod 60Seconds⌊ms ÷ 1K⌋ mod 60Events persist in localStorage · share any countdown as a live iframe (?embed=1)All local — nothing is uploaded to a server

Every second the browser re-subtracts: target minus now, decomposed by modular arithmetic into days, hours, minutes and seconds.

Sam's product launch

Sam launches a product at 09:00 on December 1, 2026, and sets a countdown on November 28, 2026 at 15:30. He enables browser notifications so he is alerted the moment it ends.

  1. Remaining ms:diff = Dec 1 09:00 − Nov 28 15:30 = 2 days and 17.5 hours in milliseconds.
  2. Days:⌊diff ÷ 86,400,000⌋ = 2 days — the whole-day count is peeled off first.
  3. Hours · minutes · seconds:The leftover is 17 h 30 m 00 s: hours = ⌊left ÷ 3.6M⌋, minutes = ⌊left ÷ 60K⌋ mod 60, seconds = ⌊left ÷ 1K⌋ mod 60.
  4. At zero:When diff hits 0 a Notification fires and the timer flips to "passed" — and Sam can embed the same timer on his launch page with the iframe code.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can I count down to a specific date and time?

Yes. Set any future date and time, and the tool displays a live countdown in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. It also calculates the total number of workdays (Monday-Friday) between today and the target date, useful for project deadlines and event planning.

Does the countdown account for weekends and holidays?

It calculates workdays excluding Saturdays and Sundays. US federal holidays are not automatically excluded since holiday observance varies by country and employer. For precise project scheduling, manually adjust for your organization's holidays. The countdown updates every second in real-time.
