Why rotation always re-encodes — illustrated

Rotating a video is not a metadata trick the way players fake it with a rotation flag: real rotation rearranges pixels, so every frame must be decoded, transformed, and re-encoded (transpose/hflip/vflip filters with libx264 CRF 20). For 90°/270° turns the frame dimensions swap — a 1920×1080 landscape becomes 1080×1920 portrait — which is exactly what phones and social apps expect from vertical video. Processing runs at roughly 0.2× real-time in WebAssembly, so a 1-minute clip takes about 5 minutes on a typical laptop.

Unlike stream-copy cutting, rotation touches every pixel, so the GOP structure must be rebuilt by the encoder.

Sideways phone video — Priya's concert clip

Priya filmed a 42-second concert clip holding her phone vertically, but the camera saved it as 1920×1080 landscape with the stage rotated 90° clockwise.

  1. Load & preview:She drops the clip in; the preview shows it lying on its side, and the header reads 1920 × 1080
  2. Pick the transform:She clicks Rotate 90° CW — the live preview (CSS-transformed, instant) stands upright, and the output size flips to 1080 × 1920 portrait
  3. Re-encode:Precise mode is the only option here, so she hits Rotate: ffmpeg decodes, applies transpose=1 to every frame, and re-encodes — about 3–4 minutes for the 42 s clip
  4. Verify & post:The MP4 downloads as concert_rotated.mp4, plays upright in her phone gallery, and is ready to post as a vertical Short

About this tool

What is this tool?

Rotate 90/180/270 or flip video with live preview. Universal MP4 export. In-browser.

What Is the Video Rotator?

The Video Rotator fixes orientation: rotate 90° clockwise or counter-clockwise, turn 180°, or mirror horizontally and vertically. The preview applies the transform instantly in CSS so you can see the result before exporting, and the real export re-encodes every frame to a clean H.264 MP4 with ffmpeg.wasm — all in your browser.

How to Rotate a Video

Drop your video, click the rotation or flip buttons until the preview looks right, then hit Rotate. Quarter turns automatically swap the output dimensions for correct vertical video. Download the finished MP4 when the encode finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does rotation always re-encode the video?

Rotation rearranges actual pixels in every frame, so stream copy is impossible — each frame must be decoded, transformed (transpose/hflip/vflip), and re-encoded. This tool uses H.264 CRF 20, which keeps quality high while rebuilding the file. Expect roughly 0.2× real-time speed in WebAssembly.

Does rotating swap the video dimensions?

Yes — 90° and 270° turns swap width and height. A 1920×1080 landscape clip becomes a 1080×1920 portrait clip, which is exactly what phones and social platforms expect from vertical video. The tool shows the output dimensions before you export.

Can I flip a video like a mirror?

Yes. Mirror H flips horizontally (the selfie-cam fix) and Flip V flips vertically. Flips combine freely with any rotation, and the live preview shows the combined result instantly before you commit to the slower re-encode.
