Fast cut vs precise cut — illustrated

Video files store frames in groups of pictures (GOPs): a full keyframe every 1–10 seconds, followed by much smaller delta frames. A fast cut (-c copy) never decodes anything — it copies the compressed byte ranges between two keyframes, so it finishes instantly and is bit-perfect, but the cut lands on the nearest keyframe before your start point, which can shift the beginning by a second or two. A precise cut decodes from the preceding keyframe, discards frames up to your exact start time, and re-encodes (libx264 CRF 20 + AAC) so the output starts on exactly the frame you picked — at the cost of CPU time (roughly 0.2× real-time speed in WebAssembly) and a small generational quality loss.

The fast path copies compressed packets; the precise path decodes, discards, and re-encodes. Pick fast for trimming long recordings, precise when the first frame must be exact.

Clipping a highlight — Sam's 4:00 recording

Sam has a 4-minute gameplay recording and wants just the 3.5-second highlight, framed exactly from the moment the boss appears.

  1. Find the moment:The filmstrip timeline shows the boss appearing between the 1:30 and 1:34 thumbnails; he drags the start handle to 1:30.0 and the end handle to 1:33.5 — a 3.5 s selection
  2. Try fast first:His phone records at ~8 Mbps, so a lossless copy of 3.5 s is about 3.5 s × 8 Mbps ≈ 3.5 MB — but the output starts ~1 s early at the previous keyframe, catching the tail of the previous attack
  3. Switch to precise:Because the first frame matters here, he re-cuts in Precise mode: the decoder discards up to exactly 1:30.0 and re-encodes with libx264 CRF 20, at roughly 0.2× real-time — about 18 s of processing for the 3.5 s clip
  4. Verify & download:He previews the looped selection before cutting and confirms the output starts on the boss appearing frame; the MP4 downloads as gameplay_cut.mp4

Schneller Schnitt vs. präziser Schnitt — was passiert tatsächlich mit Ihrem Video

Warum beginnt mein schneller Schnitt etwas früher?
