A move is really a deadline problem, not a packing problem — most of the pain is administrative work with a hard external cut-off: giving your landlord notice, filing a USPS change of address, switching utilities, transferring prescriptions. This generator front-loads 38 default tasks into seven phases and, once you enter a moving date, back-dates every phase by counting whole weeks backwards from that day. The move readiness figure is deliberately simple: tasks ticked divided by tasks on the list. It is a share, not a countdown, so adding a task makes the percentage go down even though nothing got worse — worth knowing before you panic about a bar that moves backwards. The 38 tasks are only a starting point; anything you add is filed under the phase you choose and counted in the same denominator.
Top: the 38 default tasks are weighted toward the post-move admin tail (8 tasks), which is the bucket people forget. Deadlines are computed by subtracting whole weeks from the moving date — the After Moving phase has no week offset, so it gets no due date. Bottom: readiness is ticked ÷ total, which is why adding a task lowers the bar.

This generator builds a personalized moving timeline across eight weeks and seven phases, pre-loaded with more than 38 tasks from the moments people forget — scheduling utility transfers, changing address with the USPS, transferring school and medical records, draining appliances, reserving the elevator — down to day-of essentials. It asks for your move specifics (distance, household size, DIY versus movers, timing) and produces the right tasks in the right weeks, tracks completion, and accepts custom additions for the things unique to your move.
First-time movers discovering how many loose ends a move actually has. Families juggling school transfers, medical records, and activity enrollments on top of packing. Renters protecting security deposits who need documented cleanup and walkthrough steps. Long-distance movers coordinating movers, storage, pets, and arrival-day logistics. Anyone who has previously moved and sworn never to wing it again.
(1) Enter your move date and basics: origin and destination, household size, moving method, and special items like pets or vehicles. (2) The generator schedules 38+ preset tasks across eight weeks in seven phases — planning, decluttering, packing, logistics, transfers, final week, and move day. (3) Work the timeline top to bottom, checking tasks off; overdue items surface so nothing slips. (4) Add custom tasks for your specifics. (5) The final-week and move-day views compact into the short list you actually need those days.
Eight weeks out is when organized moves start, and the sequence matters more than the start date. Weeks 8–6 are for decisions, not boxes: book movers or reserve a truck (prices climb sharply inside 30 days), start decluttering room by room, and inventory what will not make the trip — sell, donate, discard now, because every kept box costs money to move. Weeks 5–3 are packing: start with storage, guest rooms, books, and off-season clothes; pack 3–5 boxes a day rather than marathon weekends; label every box with room and contents on the side, not the top. Weeks 2–1 handle the administrative spine: utility transfer dates at both ends, USPS mail forwarding, address changes for banks, insurance, subscriptions, and licenses; school and medical record requests; and a first-night box with sheets, toiletries, chargers, medications, and basic tools. Final week: confirm the movers, defrost the fridge 24 hours ahead, drain washer hoses, set aside documents and valuables to move personally, and photograph utility meters. Move day: walkthrough against your inventory, meter photos again, and do not let the truck leave before the destination contact plan is confirmed.
38 preset tasks across 7 phases: 8 weeks out (research movers, get quotes), 6 weeks (book mover, start packing non-essentials), 4 weeks (change of address, transfer utilities, notify schools), 2 weeks (confirm details, pack essentials box), 1 week (deep clean, defrost fridge, final packing), moving day (load boxes, final walk-through), and post-move (update registrations, register to vote).
Yes. Add unlimited custom tasks to any phase. Each task has a checkbox that persists in your browser's localStorage. Progress is shown as a percentage complete with a visual progress bar. You can also export the checklist as a CSV or print it for offline use.
