Gratuity Calculator

Calculate the right gratuity for restaurants, taxis, deliveries, and more — with regional norms, round-to-friendly-amounts, and per-person splits. Free and instant.

Gratuity rules are unwritten, regional, and easy to second-guess: 15% or 20% at dinner, 10% for a taxi, a flat few dollars for delivery. This calculator applies the customary percentage for the service and region, then shows the tip and total — no mental math while the waiter waits.

Split the bill at the same time: enter the number of people and get each person's share of both the bill and the tip, rounded to convenient amounts. It runs entirely in your browser, so it works offline mid-flight or in a dead-zone restaurant basement.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service — closer to 20% for good service at full-service restaurants. Some venues add an automatic gratuity for large parties; check the bill first so you do not tip twice.

Do I tip on the tax?

Traditionally no — the percentage applies to the pre-tax subtotal. In practice the difference on a $100 meal is about $1.50 at 20%, which is why many people simply tip on the total. This calculator can work either way; the regional setting notes local customs.
