The US passport photo spec — illustrated
The U.S. State Department requires a printed photo of exactly 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) in which the head — from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head — measures 25–35 mm (1 to 1⅜ in), and in which the eyes sit between 1⅛ and 1⅜ inches from the bottom edge. For digital submissions the image must be at least 600 × 600 px at 300 DPI (up to 1200 × 1200 px), on a plain white or off-white background, taken within the last six months, with a neutral expression and no shadows or glare. This tool chains a MediaPipe face-detection pass, an auto-crop that normalizes the head-height and eye-line geometry against those ratios, a local AI background-removal model (BiRefNet-lite, falling back to RMBG-1.4) to composite a white backdrop, and a compliance check that scores each requirement before exporting a single photo or a 4 × 6 in print sheet.
On a 51 mm tall canvas, a compliant head fills 49–69% of the height. The eye line must sit 29–35 mm from the bottom — the crop is tuned to that band, not just centered.

- Upload & detect:She uploads a 3000×4000 JPEG. A MediaPipe face pass locates her face landmarks — chin, crown, and both eye centers — so the crop math has real geometry to work with rather than guessing.
- Auto-crop:The auto-crop scales and centers the face so her head height (chin → crown) lands at 30 mm on the 51 mm canvas — squarely in the 25–35 mm band — and drops the eye line to ~31 mm from the bottom edge, inside the 1⅛–1⅜ in window.
- Background:The local BiRefNet-lite model (RMBG-1.4 as fallback) removes the wall, and the pipeline composites a plain white backdrop, exporting at 300 DPI to a 600 × 600 px minimum so the file passes the digital-submission resolution rule.
- Export:The compliance panel confirms head size, eye position, and resolution all pass. She downloads the single 51 × 51 mm photo plus the 4 × 6 in sheet, which lays out four copies with cut guides for a one-stop photo-lab print.
