How local photo restoration works — illustrated

Every fix here is a per-pixel pass over an RGBA buffer pulled from a canvas — no server, no upload, no AI model download. Restoration runs as a fixed six-stage pipeline in this order: sepia removal → brightness → contrast → denoise → sharpen → colorize. Order matters: colour casts are neutralised first so the later passes measure the true tonal range, and sharpening runs last so it amplifies cleaned pixels rather than grain. Brightness and contrast are global (one adjustment for the whole image, derived from its histogram), denoise and sharpen are local (each pixel is compared against its neighbours), and colorize is a tonal tint derived from each pixel's own grey level.

Unsharp masking is why sharpening comes last — it subtracts a blurred copy from the original, so any noise left in the image gets amplified along with the detail.

Worked example

A faded 1940s family portrait, 1200×900 px, measures an average luminance of 62 out of 255 — badly underexposed. You enable Auto Brightness, Auto Contrast, Denoise, and Sharpen at 50%.

  1. Brightness gain:128 ÷ 62 = 2.06× → clamped to 1.30×
  2. Contrast stretch:per-channel min→0, max→255
  3. Denoise window:3×3, neighbours within ±30 kept
  4. Sharpen blur radius:1 + 0.50 × 2 = 2.0 px
  5. Sharpen output:orig + (orig − blurred) × 1.0
  6. Delivered as:PNG at full 1200×900 resolution

Partially — AI sharpening reconstructs edge detail convincingly for mild blur and camera shake, but information truly absent from the image (severely out-of-focus faces) cannot be invented back. The sharpening works best on prints that were sharp when new and softened by scanning and age.

How does photo colorization work?

A neural network trained on millions of photographs predicts plausible colors from context — skies are blue, grass green, skin tones inferred from lighting. Results on portraits and landscapes are usually convincing; colors of specific objects (the car's actual paint) are guesses. The colorized output is a copy — originals stay untouched.
