The EXIF container format — illustrated

EXIF lives inside a JPEG as a marker segment (0xFFE1, APP1). The segment payload starts with the six-byte signature Exif\0\0, followed by a TIFF header that declares the byte order (II for little-endian or MM for big-endian) and the magic number 0x002A. That header points to the first Image File Directory (IFD0), which holds camera make/model, orientation, timestamps, and software, plus pointers to two sub-directories: the Exif Sub-IFD (exposure time, f-number, ISO, focal length, white balance) and the GPS IFD (latitude, longitude, altitude — the classic privacy leak). This tool walks those segments directly in the browser, flags the sensitive fields, and then re-encodes the pixels through a fresh canvas so every metadata tag is dropped from the output.

A phone snapshot typically carries 40+ tags. The three circled here — DateTimeOriginal, Software, and every GPS coordinate — are exactly what this viewer highlights as removable before download.

Worked example

Priya shares smartphone photos to a public blog, and she wants to confirm nothing about her home location or camera is embedded in the files.

  1. Upload:She drops a 4.8 MB JPEG taken with her phone. The viewer parses the APP1 segment and finds 47 EXIF tags spread across IFD0, the Exif Sub-IFD, and the GPS IFD.
  2. Review:Camera model, a 1/120s exposure at f/1.8 and ISO 100, DateTimeOriginal, and GPS coordinates at 40.7128°N 74.0060°W are all listed. The GPS and timestamp rows are flagged with a RISK badge.
  3. Privacy math:The GPS rationals decode to a 6-decimal-degree position — precise to roughly 0.1 m. Posting that file publicly effectively publishes her exact doorstep.
  4. Clean:She downloads the cleaned copy. The canvas re-encode keeps the pixels but writes a fresh JPEG with no EXIF, IPTC, or XMP, so the 4.8 MB file comes back with every tag removed.
