Splitting copies pages into fresh documents — illustrated

Splitting never destroys the source file — it copies. For each selected range the tool creates a brand-new document whose page tree holds only the chosen page objects, copied along with everything they reference (content streams, fonts, images). A new cross-reference table and trailer are written, so every output is a complete, standalone PDF. Splitting every N pages walks the page list in chunks and produces one file per chunk; pick pages collects an arbitrary set (the tool also accepts dash ranges like 5-7). Because each new file re-embeds the resources its pages actually use, small extracts stay small.

Left: the 10-page source. Top-right: a single extracted range (pages 3–6) becomes one new PDF. Bottom-right: 'every 4 pages' fans the document into three chunks.

Splitting a 58-page tender document

A 9.4 MB tender PDF where the client needs the technical spec plus sectioned copies.

  1. Extract spec:Pages 12–15 are the 4-page technical spec — extract as spec.pdf (≈ 1.1 MB)
  2. Chunk the rest:Split the full document every 10 pages → 6 files (58 ÷ 10, last one short)
  3. Pick pages:A colleague wants only pages 1, 3, 5–7 → the extract mode builds that exact set
  4. Verify:Download each chunk and confirm text remains selectable — fonts were copied, not re-rendered

What Is the PDF Split Tool?

This tool divides a PDF into smaller files three ways: extract a page range for the chapters or sections you need, split every N pages for even chunks, or pick individual pages to pull out. A 200-page manual becomes per-chapter files; a merged statement separates back into months; a signed packet yields just the signature page. Pages come out identical to the source — no re-rendering, no watermark — and the whole operation runs locally in your browser, so financial and legal documents never upload to a service.

Who Should Use This Tool?

Accountants extract specific months from year-long bank statements for a loan application. HR teams pull individual forms out of a combined scan packet. Students separate chapters from course readers for annotation tools that handle one section at a time. Admin staff send only the relevant pages of a long contract instead of the whole document. Anyone who merged files earlier and now needs a piece back out uses split as the mirror operation, with the same privacy as merge.

How Does It Work?

(1) Load your PDF — page thumbnails render for orientation. (2) Choose the mode: range (pages 5–12), every-N-pages (chunks of 10), or selected pages (click individual thumbnails). (3) Click split; each output file builds locally, preserving original quality, rotation, and text layer. (4) Download files individually or as a ZIP when the split produced many. Page numbering follows the PDF's internal order, which matches the on-screen count even if the document's printed labels differ.

Split by Range, Chunk, or Page — Which Mode?

Pick the mode by how the target pages relate to the source. Range mode, pages 12–48, suits contiguous sections — one chapter, one statement month — and is the everyday default. Every-N-pages mode generates uniform chunks and suits bulk processing: feeding a scanner's output into a system that caps pages per file, or prepping a long document for review in installments. Selected-pages mode extracts non-contiguous pages — pull pages 2, 7, and 19 to build a custom excerpt packet — and pairs naturally with the merge tool: extract what matters, merge into a new order. Two practical notes: scanned PDFs sometimes number pages differently from their printed labels, so verify against thumbnails; and if you plan to OCR a split later, split by logical sections so recognition and file naming stay meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I extract specific pages from a large PDF?

Enter a page range (e.g., 5-12) or a custom comma-separated list (e.g., 1,3,7,15-20) to extract exactly the pages you need. The tool splits a 500-page document in seconds and outputs a new PDF containing only your selected pages, preserving original formatting.

Can I split a PDF into individual single-page files?

Yes. Choose the "extract every page" mode to generate one PDF per page. A 30-page contract produces 30 separate files you can download individually or as a ZIP archive. Useful for distributing specific clauses or pages to different recipients without sharing the full document.
