Your inputs
Current Grade:82%Final Weight:30%Desired Overall:88%
Required final scoreRight now 70% of your grade is set at 82%, contributing 57.4 points. The remaining 30% must supply the rest to reach 88% overall.
That would require 103% on the final — above the maximum. Consider a more achievable target or ask about extra credit.
Required final exam score
Required = (Desired − Current × (1 − Final%)) ÷ Final%

Example: (88 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 100% — when the answer exceeds 100, the target is out of reach

Worked example

An 82% current grade, a final worth 30%, and an 88% target.

  1. Locked-in points:82% × 0.70 = 57.4
  2. Points still needed:88 − 57.4 = 30.6
  3. Divide by final weight:30.6 ÷ 0.30 = 102.0%

Calculations assume a straight percentage-weighted syllabus and the standard US letter-grade cutoffs (A ≥ 93, B ≥ 83, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60). Your instructor's syllabus is the final authority — some courses curve or round differently.
