From raw text to reading time — the counting pipeline — illustrated

Counting is a pipeline, not a single number. Characters are counted per Unicode code point (with a no-space variant); words are split on whitespace; sentences on terminal punctuation; reading time is words ÷ 238 words-per-minute and speaking time is words ÷ 130 WPM. The language view buckets every character as CJK, Latin, digit, emoji, punctuation or whitespace, while the SEO view scores title and meta-description lengths against Google's ~60 / ~160 character truncation plus Flesch readability. UTF-8 bytes are a separate, larger number than visible characters — CJK and emoji encode wider.

Split, classify, divide — the same text, four different counts

Left: the raw text is split by character, by whitespace and by terminal punctuation, then time estimates divide word counts by reading (238 WPM) and speaking (130 WPM) speeds. Right: the language view buckets every character by script, and the SEO view checks title/meta lengths against Google truncation.

Trimming a newsletter to fit the inbox

Amara, a newsletter editor, has a 197-character intro paragraph and needs to know how long it will take to read and whether a title line will survive Google's truncation.

  1. Paste the draft:197 chars, 33 words, 3 sentences — the raw counts
  2. Reading time:33 ÷ 238 WPM ≈ 0m 08s at the average adult reading speed
  3. SEO pass:A 58-char title and 152-char meta both pass (bars cap at ~60/~160); Flesch 58.5 = plain English
  4. Language mix:Mostly Latin with a couple of emoji — UTF-8 bytes exceed visible characters

Does this character counter match word processor counts?

Yes. It counts characters (with and without spaces), words (split by whitespace), sentences (split by . ! ?), and paragraphs (split by double newlines) using the same algorithms as Microsoft Word and Google Docs. It also calculates reading time (200 wpm average) and speaking time (130 wpm average).

Why do I need a character counter for SEO or social media?

Google meta descriptions should be 150-160 characters; title tags 50-60 characters. Twitter/X posts allow 280 characters. Instagram captions perform best under 125 characters. This tool gives live counts as you type, so you can hit the exact target without guessing or exceeding limits.
