Lossy vs lossless audio formats — illustrated

Lossy formats (MP3, AAC, OGG, M4A) discard sounds your ears are least likely to miss — a 192 kbps MP3 keeps roughly one-tenth of the original CD data. Lossless formats (WAV PCM, FLAC) store every sample exactly: WAV uncompressed at ~1,411 kbps, FLAC compressed at 50–70% of that with zero loss. Converting lossy → lossless never restores discarded data (garbage in, bigger garbage out), so use WAV/FLAC when you have a lossless source, and MP3/AAC 192–320 kbps when size matters. Dropping a video file here extracts its soundtrack with -vn — the same engine as the Audio Extractor.

Bitrate only applies to lossy targets; WAV and FLAC ignore it because they keep every sample.

Extracting a podcast from a video — Lena's workflow

Lena records her podcast as an 8-minute (480 s) screen video and needs an MP3 for her RSS feed.

  1. Drop the video:The tool reads 480.0 s of audio from the MP4; the video track will be stripped with -vn
  2. Pick format & bitrate:Podcast feeds universally want MP3; she picks 192 kbps — speech stays crisp and the feed stays small
  3. Size math:480 s × 192,000 bits/s ÷ 8 = 11,520,000 bytes ≈ 11.0 MB — the result card confirms 11.0 MB ✓
  4. Publish:podcast_ep12.mp3 downloads ready for the feed; at 320 kbps it would be 18.3 MB — 320 kbps buys nothing for voice

Preguntas frecuentes

Which formats can I convert to?

Six outputs: MP3, AAC, OGG, and M4A at 128–320 kbps for lossy sharing, plus WAV (uncompressed 16-bit PCM) and FLAC (lossless compression) for editing and archiving. The bitrate selector only appears for lossy formats because WAV and FLAC keep every sample regardless.

Can I extract audio from a video file?

Yes — drop an MP4, WebM, or MOV and the tool strips the video track (-vn) and converts the soundtrack to your chosen format. That makes this converter a one-stop audio extractor as well.

Will converting lossy to lossless improve quality?

No. Converting MP3 to WAV or FLAC never restores the data the MP3 encoder discarded — you get a bigger file with the same audible quality. Use lossless output when your source is already lossless; use 192–320 kbps lossy when size matters.

MP3 vs WAV — which should I convert to?

WAV when the file faces further editing or archival (lossless, large); MP3 for distribution and listening (universal, small). A practical pattern: convert to WAV for your master copy, MP3 320 kbps for sharing — this tool produces either directly.

What bitrate should I choose for MP3?

320 kbps for music if storage is no concern — it is transparent to nearly all listeners. 192 kbps is the practical sweet spot with no perceptible loss for most material. 128 kbps is fine for speech and podcasts, where source quality is lower anyway.
